Roberto Itzep-Caba, a 17-year-old high school soccer and cross-country athlete in Toombs County, Georgia, was taken into federal immigration custody just two days into the school year.

The teen was stopped on August 8 for allegedly running a stop sign and driving without a valid license. Though local authorities confirmed he had no prior criminal record, fingerprint checks flagged an old administrative immigration warrant connected to his family’s asylum case nearly a decade ago.

After his arrest, ICE transferred Roberto to the Stewart Immigration Detention Center. His family, shocked by the sudden detention, has been raising funds and calling for legal support, saying Roberto’s only goals were to finish school and continue excelling in academics and athletics.

The case has sparked debate in the community over immigration enforcement, student safety, and the future of young people brought to the U.S. as children.

There has already been a GoFundMe to help him.
